Montenegro, a gem nestled in the Balkans, is renowned not just for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its heartwarming hospitality. Steeped in rich tradition and cultural etiquette, the Montenegrin way of welcoming guests is legendary. Step into any household, and regardless of your familiarity or relationship with the host, you’re immediately treated with reverence. Every visitor is met with a spread of food and drinks, often featuring homemade delicacies and refreshments.

But this gesture goes far beyond mere formalities. It embodies the Montenegrin spirit of generosity and friendship. In extending such hospitality, Montenegrins aren’t just sharing their food and drink; they are sharing their home, their stories, and a piece of their heritage. This practice is an unspoken testament to trust, respect, and a deep-rooted belief in human connection.

2. The Joys of Celebrations: Embracing Life’s Highs and Lows

In Montenegro, celebrations are an expression of life itself. Montenegrins approach every significant occasion, whether joyous or somber, with unmatched passion and enthusiasm.

Be it the radiant glow of a wedding, the jubilance of a graduation, or the innocence of a christening, each event unfolds as a grand spectacle, filled with music, dance, and laughter. And in these moments of joy, rakija, the cherished fruit brandy, is ever-present, warming hearts and forging bonds.

Montenegrin celebrations are not limited to happy occasions alone. Even in moments of grief, as in funerals, the community unites. Here, amidst the melancholy, there’s a poignant beauty as people come together, reminiscing and sharing tales of the departed, seeking solace in shared memories. The generous spread of food and drink during these times is a reflection of the Montenegrin ethos of finding strength in unity and sharing in both joy and sorrow.

3. Montenegro's Legacy Woven into Fabric: The National Costume

Montenegro’s national costume shows its vibrant history and culture. Meticulously crafted from the most exquisite materials, each piece tells a tale of eras gone by. The radiant hues, often accentuated by intricate designs in silk and golden threads, reflect the nation’s traditions and values. These costumes, worn with pride during special occasions and festivals, stand as silent yet eloquent testimonies to Montenegro’s storied past. As they shimmer in the Balkan sunlight, they encapsulate the spirit, resilience, and elegance of the Montenegrin people.

4. The Rhythms and Movements: Celebrating Montenegro through Dance

Montenegro’s dance traditions are a vibrant testament to its cultural depth. The traditional dance – “kolo” is a communal circle dance that thrives in many Balkan regions. Yet, in Montenegro, it takes on a unique form called the Oro or the “Eagle dance”. This dance, inspired by the eagle’s majestic flight, beautifully captures the spirit of community, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds.

Additionally, folklore evenings provide an immersive experience for anyone eager to engage with Montenegro’s dance heritage. The highlight being the Crnogorsko Oro, where dancers in splendid national costumes mimic the elegant flight of the eagle.

5. Songs of the Land: Gusle, Epics, and Montenegrin Music

Gusle, Montenegro’s traditional one-stringed instrument.

Music and oral traditions form the very heartbeat of Montenegrin culture. The nation’s epic poetry, rich with tales of valiant heroes and monumental battles, finds its voice through the gusle, a one-stringed instrument.

More than mere entertainment, these songs bear witness to Montenegro’s enduring spirit and its history marked by struggles and triumphs. While Montenegro’s music offers a medley of traditional sounds blended with Western influences, it’s perhaps its underappreciated realm.

From the soulful religious chants echoing the ancient times to the Venetian-inspired melodies along the coast, the country’s musical heritage, though evolving, continues to resonate with its rooted traditions.

6. A Revelry of Tradition: Montenegro's Festivals and Carnivals

Montenegro is a land that knows how to celebrate. Each festival and carnival, rich in tradition and infused with local flavor, paints a vibrant picture of the country’s cultural landscape.

Kotor, a jewel of the Adriatic, comes alive with a riveting parade. Boats, bedecked in an array of colors and designs, vie for attention, their crews hopeful for the coveted honor of being the most spectacular vessel of the lot. And as the cold winds of winter sweep through, Kotor bursts into a celebratory fervor once again. The winter carnival, a vibrant blend of music, dance, and jubilation, reaches its crescendo with the ceremonial burning of a large doll. This symbolic act, a fiery farewell to the past year’s tribulations and adversities, holds a promise – a promise of hope, renewal, and unyielding spirit.

In honor of the vibrant mimosa flower, Herceg Novi hosts the cherished Mimosa Festival every February, a month-long celebration full of fun, cultural, and sporting events. Among these, one of the most celebrated events is the “Fešta od mimoze, ribe i vina” or “Festival of Mimosa, Fish, and Wine,” which takes place across the settlements of Kumbor, Đenovići, and Baošići. Every first Saturday of February, attendees indulge in fish and wine, all while enjoying the parade of majorettes and city music. From the Fish Dinner to the Majorette Parade, the Mimosa Festival ensures a blend of tradition and contemporary performances, including various plays, exhibitions, concerts, and more.

Through these festivals and carnivals, Montenegro showcases not just its rich traditions, but its enduring zest for life.

LAKE SKADAR: A Natural Wonder in Montenegro

Discover the wonders of Lake Skadar, the largest lake in Southern Europe, beautifully positioned on the border of Montenegro and Albania. This natural haven boasts a diverse ecosystem, an interesting history, and a beautiful landscape that never fails to impress visitors and is just a short drive away from our CUE Podgorica.

Geography and Formation

Lake Skadar, situated in the heart of the western Balkan region, stands as one of Europe’s most remarkable and largest freshwater lakes. It is also a crypto depression, which means that some parts of its bottom are below sea level. Depending on the season, its expansive water surface oscillates between a considerable 370 km2 to an even more impressive 530 km2. Predominantly nestled within the borders of Montenegro, the lake acts as a natural mirror reflecting the country’s diverse landscapes. The topography around and within the lake is as varied as the legends that surround it; from rocky outcrops that jut out defiantly from the waters to the extensive and serene inundated areas that become a haven for myriad bird species and aquatic life.

One of the lake’s most fascinating aspects is its lifeline – the Bojana river which forms a crucial conduit, creating a natural passage that eventually links the lake to the glistening Adriatic Sea.  The origins of Lake Skadar are steeped in wonder. It is believed to have emerged as an ancient lake, its birth dating back millions of years. Scientists concluded that the formation of this captivating lake can be traced back to intricate tectonic activities that occurred primarily during the Cenozoic era. These seismic movements and shifts beneath the Earth’s crust led to the creation of basins which, over time, filled with water, giving rise to the majestic Skadar we know today.

Historical Footprint

Austro-Hungarian forts serve as a tangible reminder of the country’s rich history and cultural heritage. The forts played an essential role in the defense of Montenegro during the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and were critical in shaping the country’s past. Today, they stand as a testament to Montenegro’s resilience and determination to protect its people and land. Exploring these forts not only provides an opportunity to connect with the past but also allows visitors to immerse themselves in the outstanding natural beauty of Montenegro’s landscapes. The combination of history and nature makes hiking in Montenegro a remarkable experience.

Biodiversity Bliss

Lake Skadar, often hailed as a living repository of nature’s treasures, stands out as an irreplaceable hub of freshwater biodiversity in Europe. A veritable paradise for ornithologists, this expansive water body is recognized as one of the continent’s largest bird reserves. Migratory patterns lead myriad bird species to its shores, making it a vital resting and breeding ground. Moreover, Skadar Lake has a diverse fish population, many of which can be found nowhere else on the planet. Among the varied aquatic life, a staggering 31% of freshwater snails in the lake are endemics, a statistic that speaks volumes about Skadar Lake and its unparalleled significance in the broader context of global biodiversity.

Montenegrin Treasures

The Montenegrin expanse of Lake Skadar unravels like a tapestry of nature’s marvels and historic relics. Distinguished as a national park, this area is not just a refuge for diverse species but also a sentinel that preserves the fragile ecosystems that thrive there. Journeying through the lake, one can’t miss the imposing Fortress Grmožur, or the picturesque horseshoe bend near Rijeka Crnojevića, a natural wonder that perfectly encapsulates the enchanting Montenegrin landscape. Beyond the scenic vistas and historic landmarks, the Montenegrin side of the lake is a living museum where the pulse of Montenegro’s culture, history, and nature beats in perfect harmony.

Human Impact and Conservation

In the heart of the western Balkan region, Skadar Lake, with its shimmering waters and diverse ecosystems, has been a sanctuary for countless species for millennia. However, like many of Earth’s pristine havens, it finds itself on the frontline against the escalating pressures of human intervention. The subtle equilibrium of its ecosystems, which took nature centuries to cultivate, is being rapidly destabilized. Pollution from both domestic and industrial sources has tainted its purity, endangering the lifeforms that call it home.

Further exacerbating its vulnerability is the aggressive extraction of sand and gravel, which threatens not only its coastal integrity but also disrupts habitats for myriad aquatic species. Such activities, unchecked, could spell an ecological disaster, pushing the lake’s unique ecosystems to the point of no return.

Yet, in this narrative of encroachment and environmental degradation, rays of hope shine through. Recognizing the ecological and cultural treasure that is Lake Skadar, initiatives have been taken at multiple levels to ensure its conservation. Nationally, Montenegro’s decision to bestow upon it the status of a national park exemplifies the country’s commitment to preserving this natural wonder. This designation brings with it increased resources, and protective measures, ensuring that the lake’s ecological integrity remains intact for generations to come.

On the broader international canvas, Lake Skadar’s recognition as a Ramsar site – a wetland of international importance – amplifies its significance on the global environmental stage. Such an acknowledgment is not merely symbolic; it fosters international collaboration and resources, directing them towards the lake’s preservation. Skadar Lake stands as a beacon of natural beauty and biodiversity, it also embodies a universal message: the pressing need for collective responsibility.

Lake Skadar stands as a testament to nature’s marvels. This gem is not just a lake but a living repository of history, culture, and biodiversity. As we enjoy its beauty, let’s also remember our duty to conserve and protect this wonder. Book a stay with CUE Podgorica today and Lake Skadar is just a hop away.

Theatre season in The Living Room

Starting February 2023, The Living Room started a new project, which has been recording significant results since the beginning. Stand-up shows and performances with actors from Montenegro and surrounding countries have attracted the attention of numerous guests from Podgorica, Nikšić, Bar, as well as other coastal cities.

In February, the repertoire featured the play “Žena koja je skuvala svog muža” in which Marija Đurić, Anđelija Rondović and Đorđije Tatić, who also directed the show, present male-female relationships in a comical way. It was made in the executive production of the Korifej Theater, and based on the text of the British writer Debbie Isitt, the story deals with the treatment of women as consumables and their traditionally understood role.

Last month, stand-up comedian Srđan Olman entertained the audience with his show “Šta nas je snašlo?”. Srđan, although coming from Vojvodina, has excellent knowledge of the opportunities and local topics in our country, and he used his knowledge to complete the story about the side effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the first week of March, the program included the play “Šta muškarci/žene žele” directed by Mirjana Karanović, starring Tijana Janković and Ivan Ivanov. Cabaret comedy about male-female relationships is shown through eight different situations. In each of them, women’s aspirations do not match with men’s, their expectations, behavior, demands, which caused a lot of laughter and good reactions among the audience.

Last Friday, March 10th we had a stand-up comedian Peđa Bajović, a native of Bijelo Polje, who comes to us from Zagreb. In the show “Muškarac”, Bajović “gave a lecture” about the unquestionable superiority of the female gender, which was interwoven with instructions for men, how to survive it, and enjoy it along the way.

After that, on March 24th , we had the play “Koronirajmo”, starring Bojana Đurašković and Marko Milošević, who also signed the text and direction. They humorously presented young couple who decide to start a life together during the coronavirus pandemic.

In April, Dragan Marinković Maca’s play “Kakva ti je žena, takav ti je život” is on the repertoire, the play will take place on April 7th. The performance will make you think carefully about yourself and the world around you, because as Marinković says, we are a generation that does not want a relationship.

“We want the facade of an effortless relationship, holding hands without looking into each other’s eyes, protraction without serious conversation, promising without real commitment. We also want to celebrate the anniversary without the 364 days leading up to it. We play games with no winners and end up alone.
